Front-End Engineer

The Texas Tribune is a nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news organization that is recognized as a leader in self-supporting journalism. Our engineering department is seeking a front-end software developer who will work full-time out of our downtown Austin newsroom to refine our reader experience.

We want to hear from you if:
    • You are enthusiastic about our mission and making newsroom workflows better
    • You are curious and willing to learn, adapt and teach
    • You are detail-oriented and able to set and meet deadlines
    • You are interested in collaborating across disciplines and departments
    • You are adept at clearly and effectively communicating complex ideas

    You should have:
    • At least 1-2 years professional experience as a front-end web engineer, with fluency in modern JavaScript (ES6 + Babel), HTML, and CSS
    • Experience with Git or another version control system
    • A commitment to modern web standards, performance and accessibility, and a desire to use this knowledge to build user-centered experiences
    • The ability and desire to work within a modular style system, and to continuously iterate on the system in collaboration with our design team
    • The knowledge to speak to the technical side of ideas and issues in design/editorial meetings, and ask thoughtful questions to better understand user needs

It would be nice if you:
    • Have worked with a templating engine or web framework
    • Have experience with a build system, like Webpack or Gulp
    • Have worked with modern JavaScript frameworks like React/Redux, Vue, or Angular
    • Have used Sass, Less, or another CSS extension language to write your CSS
    • Have used modern CSS layout systems such as Flexbox and Grid
    • Have experience interacting with Python, Ruby, Django, or other back-end code
    • Are interested in growing your user testing and user research knowledge and skills

We know there are great candidates who won’t check all of these boxes, and we also know you might bring important skills that we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
