The Texas TribuneThe Texas Tribune

Regional Editor

The Texas Tribune, the state’s go-to source for Texas politics and public policy news, is seeking a full-time regional editor. This editor will work with Tribune reporters from across the state to bring attention to how state policies and decisions are affecting different regions and communities.

The perfect fit for this position is a gifted editor who loves the diversity of this state and is passionate about telling stories reflecting that diversity and evoke a sense of place. While so much attention is focused on Texas’ urban centers, this editor will ensure that other parts of the state are better represented in state coverage.

The editor will initially supervise reporters based in Lubbock, covering the South Plains and Panhandle, and in Lufkin, covering East Texas. The Tribune is actively fundraising to support new reporting positions in the Rio Grande Valley and the Permian Basin, and the new editor will help to hire for those positions.

The issues to cover are numerous, but this editor will ensure that their reporters are focused on highlighting what’s really happening across Texas, where the challenges are and what’s bringing about change. These reporters will cover the way statewide issues are playing out at the local level, including the local impact of state public school finance policy, transportation, environmental concerns and access to health care.

The editor will be the liaison between the reporting network and the Austin newsroom. There will be regular opportunities to collaborate with other Tribune journalists when the journalistic need arises.

In collaboration with the Tribune’s editing team, this journalist will also help with breaking news and work on other aspects of the Tribune’s journalism, as the need arises. The regional editor can be based anywhere in Texas. The editor will report to the Tribune’s senior managing editor.

The salary for this position will vary depending on qualifications; the minimum is $85,000.

    Responsibilities:

    • Think broadly and expansively about our state’s unique regions and communities to ensure that our coverage includes a strong mix of accountability journalism, features and ground-up reporting on the people and movements that shape and are affected by policy and political discourse.
    • Manage a team of reporters based in different parts of the state. This will include regular travel to the cities where the regional reporters are based.
    • Collaborate with colleagues on stories on other beats as needed.
    • Collaborate with the Tribune’s data and product teams on daily stories, long-term features and data explorers.
    • Collaborate with the Tribune’s Audience, Multimedia and Photo teams to ensure we have rich storytelling that addresses what Texans want and need.
    • As part of the editing team, develop and moderate panel discussions for Tribune events and the annual Texas Tribune Festival, an event that has attracted such speakers as John Cornyn and Hillary Clinton.
    • Participate in radio and television hits with our media partners.
    • All reporters and editors at The Texas Tribune are responsible for occasional evening, weekend and holiday work, as well as general assignment shifts as news demands.

    Qualifications:

    • BA/BS degree and 5+ years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
    • Experience guiding and editing public policy coverage
    • Experience and a deep knowledge of Texas geography, politics and government is preferred, but not mandatory.
    • A clear ability to work quickly, and under tight deadlines
    • A deep commitment to and enthusiasm for enterprise reporting
    • Evidence of strong reporting, fact-checking and writing skills and a firm grasp of AP style
    • A demonstrated ability to manage a talented and ambitious team, coaching and helping develop reporters with varying levels of experience
    • Strong familiarity with journalistic ethics and libel law
    • A clear desire and proven ability to collaborate with other colleagues across the organization

We know there are great candidates who won’t check all of these boxes, and we also know you might bring important skills that we haven’t considered. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

    About The Texas Tribune

Here’s what you should know about the Tribune. From day one we’ve had disruption, innovation and risk-taking in our DNA. We’re ambitious as all get out but still have the punch-above-your-weight mentality of a scrappy start-up. We believe we can meet the demands of our audience and our own expectations for excellence without breaking the bank — or our staff. We understand not everything is a story for us — we have to make choices — but we’re always looking to expand our boundaries. We’re nonprofit because the challenging economic reality for media these days obligates us to find a different way, reliable and sustainable, to fund serious journalism. We’re nonpartisan because we live in the United States of Confirmation Bias — and we don’t need to be part of the problem. We don’t need to be yet another source of information affirming the voices and perspectives that are already in people’s heads. At the same time, nonpartisan is not non-thinking. We call B.S. when B.S. needs to be called.

All of us at the Trib believe the best way to achieve that mission is to resemble the state we cover. We’re committed to building an inclusive newsroom for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we’re taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply for this role, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
